Creating Seamless Photoshop Tiles

I am so eager for you to see this technique and to let me know if you like it. It’s a way to develop a seamless repeat pattern in Photoshop in a way that is guaranteed to always be seamless and yet allow you to see the pattern in repeat as you create it. It’s also easy to do. So, please watch and then let me know what you think.

Tatyana, I am so glad this makes sense to you! I’d love to see what you do.

Well how cool is that!!! Does this work in all versions…and PS Elements?

    • Sherry London May 31, 2013, 7:42 pm

Terri, my teaching assistant, who also uses Elements, just assured me that you do have Define Pattern command in Elements and that the pattern goes in the Pattern presets. You can then add a Pattern adjustment layer in a manner similar to Photoshop. I am assuming that you also can make a fixed size selection marquee. That means you ought to be able to get this technique to work. Let me know if you have any problems.

Thanks Sherry. I’ll certainly try it in Elements. I also have PS CS2 so I can try it there as well, but I’m much more familiar with Elements.

Terri, it should work in both programs. After I called her last night, my TA quickly went to her copy of Elements and started playing and called me back. She said the only thing really different is that you need to look toward the top of the menu for Adjustment layers in Elements. Again, if you’re stuck, just ask!

Hi. When I add my layer-newfilllayer-pattern-ok I cannot see all the previous layers. I can only see the current one laid down?

    • Sherry London Jun 9, 2013, 5:45 pm

Gillian, you need to have turned OFF the background or colour fill layer before you defined the pattern so you don’t get a fill on the pattern definition layer. You need to be able to see the icons in the pattern with no background. You can always but the background under your final tile.

Ahhh. Yes. When i first create the defined patterns they need to be transparent of course. I had created the transparent background only when I created the 1000×1000 pixel piece. but of course the defined ones were on white backgrounds. thank you. I think with a nights sleep and a little distance these things can be obvious, but when you are fuming and ranting at the screen in the moment :S. thank you. 😀

Gillian, I know. That is something I STILL do. The only thing is that I’ve done it so much that it’s easy to spot (grin). When I fight with Photoshop, I am ALWAYS convinced that I’m right! (but Photoshop usually wins)

So glad you posted this link again(in class). I think when I first watched it ‘ages’ ago I didn’t have a great understanding of what you were doing because I was a newbie at photoshop. Having revisited, it’s fabulous. Will have to try this method soon. Thank you Sherry!

LOVE THIS! So glad I got to meet you at Surtex this year 🙂 FYI, It may be my browser – but It gave me an error message when I tried to sign up for your emails – something about it not being active. Hugs Annie

Sherri I love this but what about a repeat where you might have a lot of different icons in it. Do you let us in on your secrets in part 2
